Amulsar Guardians Open Letter to EDB

The guardians of Amulsar sent an open letter to Nikolay Podguzov, the chairman of the EDB board, Denis Ilyin, the deputy chairman of the EDB board, and Armen Melkikyan, the director of the EDB representation in Armenia. The letter says: "We, the people against the Amulsar metal mine project, being from different fields, having different professions and living in different settlements, have a clear position regarding the fate of Amulsar.

That is. AMULSAR SHOULD REMAIN A MOUNTAIN AND THE END.

Having been forced to carry out round-the-clock duty on the dirt roads near the entrances of Amulsar for years through peaceful actions, we managed to stop the plan to exploit Amulsar as a mine. Our struggle has been successful because the broad sections of society and in particular the vast majority of the population of the resort town of Jermuk on the slopes of Amulsar have supported and shared our point of view. This is evidenced by the results of the petition held in Jermuk community, where around 3000 residents have signed their clear opposition to the exploitation of metal mines in the community. There are many facts about the active participation of the population of the community in the actions against the Amulsar project.

The operation of Amulsar as a mine contains multi-layered problems, and we will try to mention some of them. Amulsar is located in the "heart" of Armenia's most important water resources, in the area of the Arpa and Vorotan rivers, as well as very close to the Kechut reservoir that feeds Sevan.

The environmental risks of Amulsar have been discussed many times and by many experts. The Amulsar exploitation project was also negatively assessed by the independent experts of the international ELARD-TRC companies commissioned by the government today with state funding.

In addition to uncontrollable environmental problems, the exploitation of Amulsar is a direct blow to the existence and economic direction of Jermuk mineral water treatment, resort and tourist town. Jermuk was originally created as a hydrotherapy and health resort zone, and this branch is steadily developing in the community. The Lydian company has not yet been able to provide guarantees regarding the lack of impact on the resort zone in the event of the operation of Amulsar. It will not be possible to present it, because there is not a single mineral-hydrotherapy resort zone in the world, next to which an open metal mine is operated.

The residents of the community are just against the implementation of such a non-perspective project and the forced change of their socio-economic branch. At the stage of public hearings, the population of Jermuk city was deliberately left out of the opportunity to participate in them, because they always had a negative attitude towards that program.

We confidently note that the population of Jermuk community and many people who share their approach stand firmly behind Amulsar and warn that any support for this project is an adventure and doomed to failure. Amulsar is a living area for the population of Jermuk community and we will not give it up.
